Disclaimer: SEO Theory is not associated with Quantcast.com and the SEO Theory real search market share report is an estimate based on data provided by Quantcast.com for free through its Web site. Quantcast.com has not endorsed this report. These traffic estimates may not represent actual unique visitor data.

The following tables are based on Quantcast’s estimated U.S. visitors for the selected domains. The domains listed here were included in the June 2008 Real Search Market Share report because Quantcast estimated a minimum of 100,000 visitors for each.

The report is divided into three tables: Algorithmic Search, Directory Search, and Blog Search.

Quantcast’s estimate for Cuil is based on traffic as of the last few days of the month. Assuming Cuil maintains some of its initial momentum, it should move up in the rankings for August.

I did not have time to check other search engines to see if they have improved their performance. I may modify this ranking report at a later time.

Snap and Nextag reversed positions. I’m not sure of why.

Quantcast trends charts indicated that many search engines experienced a dip in visits earlier this year but have begun to recover.

According to Quantcast, Wordpress.com received over 25 million U.S. visitors in July (more than 96 million worldwide). They provide a much less specific estimate of 44 million visitors for Blogspot. If you’re interested in leveraging the blogosphere for search, here are a few tips:

  1. Don’t use Blogsearch for link research (it’s no more reliable than Google’s Web search).
  2. Don’t overlook the value of hosting sites on Wordpress and Blogger (Blogspot).
  3. Make sure your blog can be found on at least the five search services shown above
  4. Make sure your blog pings for each new post.
  5. Write down for yourself a brief demographic of the audience you want to reach. Use Quantcast’s demographic descriptors as a guideline for how to picture your intended market.

…sigh…

Well, I realized that I’ve overlooked a search engine or two or three:

search.lycos.com received an estimated 643,777 visitors in July, according to Quantcast. That would have earned 16th place ahead of a9.

mamma.com received an estimated 1,809,966 visitors.

search.netscape.com received 132,362 visitors.

I’ll start including them in next month’s reports.
