There are different functions, each important in its own way. I’m not dead set against link building. Not at all. I build links all the time, nearly every day. I just don’t overlook the other tasks that are equally important.

A great SEO team should have at least one good link specialist who can develop a strategy and execute it effectively.

Totally agree. I’ve always felt it was the job of the SEO to handle the onpage optimization, this way the links we secure actually have something to ‘anchor’ into. A lot of people who talk about link building also lump site structure issues into the job description; again – this should be the responsibility of the SEO. Naming links, using nofollows, setting up breadcrumbs… all should be done in the optimization effort before/during the link marketing campaign.

I find the blogging / linking method works extremely well too. The amount of time people waste trying to get comment links or article links when they could be creating a useful resource.

This actually works much more than most think. Just think about all the websites out there in which you can create a page about yourself and link to it.
